Overview
In early childhood programs, many conflicts are not about competence or commitment—they are about culture. This interactive three-part training explores how nationality, racialized experiences, and generational influences shape communication styles, expectations of leadership, definitions of “respect,” approaches to child guidance, and family engagement. Through self-assessments, case studies, and breakout discussions, participants will examine how misunderstandings between directors and staff, teachers and children, and educators and families often stem from unspoken cultural norms rather than ill intent. Grounded in research on cultural humility, psychological safety, and culturally responsive practice, this session equips early childhood professionals with practical tools to replace assumptions with inquiry, strengthen relationships, and build more inclusive, connected learning communities.
Objective
Recognize how culture influences communication, behavior, and expectations
Identify when misunderstandings may be caused by different perspectives
Use strategies to respond with curiosity, respect, and clarity
Reflect on your own experiences and how they shape your teaching and interactions
