Overview
This workshop moves past traditional cultural competence to explore cultural humility—a lifelong commitment to self-reflection and learning that fosters genuine, respectful partnerships with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Participants will engage in self-examination of their own biases, understand how power and privilege shape interactions, and develop practical strategies to build trust and reduce inequities in their daily work with children and youth.
Objective
  • Define cultural humility and differentiate it from cultural competence.
  • Identify personal biases, assumptions, and the impact of privilege.
  • Develop skills in active listening and asking respectful questions.
  • Recognize how power imbalances affect relationships and outcomes.
  • Learn strategies for culturally responsive communication and co-creation of ideas and solutions.
  • Commit to continuous learning and self-reflection.
