Change a Constant – Managing Transitions and Change in Early Learning and Care Settings

Course Number
CS13: 10_EN
Overview

The Need

As the cliché goes: “Nothing in life is constant except for change,” and while we might prefer it to be otherwise, the world of early learning and care is no exception. Internal shifts such as staff resignations and retirements (possibly even your own), facility and technology challenges, revenue and expense shifts, and swings in parent expectations are always around the corner, if not here already. The same is true for externally driven changes including evolving EEC regulations and policies, professional development expectations, public health crises, demographic shifts and economic downturns.

The Offering

Change as a Constant is a four-part cohort learning module for early childhood leaders in both center-based and family childcare settings who are looking to better anticipate, manage and shape changes in their workplace. Through facilitated discussion a group of ten to twelve leaders will together explore and develop strategies. The course will introduce tools from the fields of management and organizational development to equip you as a better change manager. This will include techniques for strategic planning, crisis management, teambuilding, communication, and succession planning. Participants will be asked to identify a challenge or transition from their own workplace to be shared and addressed together and to share this with the facilitator prior to the series launch.
Objective

By participating in this learning cohort learning module participants will:

1. understand how their particular concerns compare with those of other veteran
    leaders in the field and learn how lessons from others may help guide their own
    change process;
2. identify concrete steps and strategies they can take to ready their centers
    for
anticipated transition and change;
3.  gain confidence in accepting and shaping change, as opposed to trying to prevent
     or control it;
4.  develop strategies for identifying and mentoring successors and new leaders;
5.  gain an understanding of how to engage, inform and support stakeholders
     so that they’re prepared and “on board with” anticipated transitions;
6.  and gain the support and counsel of peers who are navigating a similar transitions.
